We hope you’re enjoying your home and staying comfortable through every season, but especially now as we are starting to see lower tempatures! We know that heating and cooling systems can sometimes be a bit mysterious, especially in Charleston where we don’t get to turn on our heat very often! We wanted to take a moment to explain how heat pumps work as many of the homes here utilize one for the heating system.

What is a Heat Pump?
Unlike traditional heating systems, a heat pump doesn’t generate heat directly. Instead, it moves heat from one place to another, making it incredibly energy-efficient. Think of it like a refrigerator but in reverse: When in use, it pulls heat from the outside air and transfers it inside.

How Does it Work?
1. The heat pump extracts warmth from the outdoor air (yes, even when it’s cold!).
**Note: Heat pumps warm the air gradually, typically increasing the indoor temperature by about 1-2 degrees per hour. So, be patient—it’s working efficiently, even if it feels slow! If it is getting warmer than it is working!
2. It compresses this air to increase its temperature.
3. The warm air is then circulated inside your home to keep you nice and toasty.

Why Are Heat Pumps Awesome?
Energy Efficiency: They use less electricity compared to conventional heating or cooling systems, helping you save on utility bills.
Environmentally Friendly: By moving heat rather than generating it, heat pumps have a lower carbon footprint.

Tips for Using Your Heat Pump Efficiently
-Set it and forget it: Heat pumps work best when you set a consistent temperature. Frequent adjustments can make the system work harder and less efficient.
-Keep filters clean: Regularly check and clean the air filters to ensure smooth operation. You should be replacing your air filters at least once a month! Other factors can increase this frequency such as pets. As soon as you notice it becoming dirty, we recommend replacing it.
-Don’t block vents: Ensure furniture or curtains don’t obstruct airflow for even temperature distribution.

**Note: Air coming out of the vents might not necessarily feel warm depending on the temperature. This is normal!
-Be patient with heating: Remember, heat pumps warm your space gradually. If it’s cold, don’t worry—it might take an hour or two to feel a significant difference, but it’s using energy wisely.
